This studio explored the design of the NUarch School, a new architectural education hub positioned within Newcastle’s evolving urban fabric. Set against the city’s transition from its industrial past to a knowledge-based economy, the brief challenged students to create a public-facing institution that contributes meaningfully to civic life while rethinking architectural pedagogy. Working on one of two CBD sites, the project required the development of a holistic urban strategy and an architectural proposal that integrates studio, teaching, residential and public programs into a cohesive whole. Emphasis was placed on sectional thinking, spatial atmosphere, materiality, and the school’s role as both a catalyst for urban renewal and a destination for learning, creativity, reflection and community engagement.
